Bravo! You “stuck the landing” with your last paragraph. And your reference to the New York City New Liberals, well, they’re just “old wine in a new bottle.” A wine that’s long since turned sour, like vinegar.
I also support Mamdani. The crisis of affordability is so severe that that it's as if we are 5 minutes before the storming of the Bastille. The lid must come off. The rage must be expessed. As the Vietcong said at the beginning of the Tet Offense: We must shake the earth and crack the sky.
If I lived in New York City I would rank Zohran Mamdani as my first choice for mayor and Brad Lander as my second choice because of the affordability crisis occurring there that you described in this Substack piece.
But there have been instances throughout history in countries when left-wing economic policies have failed miserably and badly hurt the very people that they were formulated and implemented to help.
And the inflation and/or negative economic growth that transpired as result of these policies did as much to give rise to right-wing populism in these nations as the neoliberal economic policies that you derogated in this commentary have done in other counties.
Also, I was disappointed in Mamdani’s refusal to condemn the phrase “Globalize the Intifada” at a time when antisemitism and antisemitic violence on both the far-left and far-right are increasing dramatically in the United States and other parts of the world.
Nevertheless, I still hope that NYC Democratic primary and general election voters give Zohran Mamdani the opportunity to serve as mayor for at least one term because the policies of the Eric Adams administration don’t seem to be working well for ordinary New Yorkers.
Aye: they end up offering us basically the choice between two cheeks of the same arse: and then call us uneducated and apathetic when we don't bother.
Warmest solidarity wishes from across the wide Atlantic! 😃🏴☠️
