The official story says otherwise: that Pride marks a steady arc of progress, proof that the system—courts, parties, corporations—has finally learned to fold queer people into its embrace. That story is true in the narrowest sense: LGBTQ people have more rights on paper than ever. But it is also a sleight of hand. When Pride is framed solely as a victory lap for liberal democracy, the most radical—and instructive—parts of queer life slip out of sight.
